Great grey shrike.

Observations as of January 20.

Hello, all bird enthusiasts!

In the Bird of the year 2010 project we want to enhance our knowledge of the winter population density and numbers of the great grey shrike. For this we ask all nature friends to take part in a mapping of the grey shrikes, “tit hawks”, in winter, in an area of your own choice, in addition to single observations. For the count the whole chosen area has to be carefully walked through, and all observed grey shrikes noted on a map. It is worth choosing a counting area that contains as much fields and other open and half-open landscapes as possible, where the grey shrikes are most likely to be seen. The counting period lasts from January 20 to February 15, but a counting area must be covered in one day.
The questionnaire form and precise counting instructions are on the Bird of the year web site, link: http://www.eoy.ee/ogijad/hallogija-talvised-vaatlused/
The main aim of the mapping is to get precise information on the winter population of grey shrikes in Estonia. If enough active bird friends are willing to take the trouble of making a count, then the information will be an important help to work out the winter number of grey shrikes during the next regular period for estimation of numbers. And not only that: on the form there is also space for noting wintering birds of prey (buzzard, hen harrier, sparrowhawk etc.). I also want to point out that 0 observations is very important information too – please be sure to send your results even if no grey shrike at all was seen in the count area. If there are any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Of course we also look forward to all occasional observations – until now we have already collected information on encounters with nearly 60 wintering birds: this is about 10% of all grey shrikes wintering in Estonia. With this number of observations the map has become very interesting: it shows clearly the more frequent presence of grey shrikes in the western parts of Estonia. But observations have arrived from nearly all Estonian counties – only in Ida-Virumaa [in north-eastern Estonia] we haven’t been able to put any red mark yet. We ask all, who still have observations from January that they haven’t forwarded yet, to please send them as soon as possible.

A continued happy shrike year!

Tarvo
