Tricks of Tallinn Bay

If you happen to visit Tallinn, it is certainly worthwhile to have a look at the seashore. Many will be amazed to see open sea outside the capital, with lapping waves. The cold that has lasted nearly two months still hasn’t managed to freeze that little backwater: the mostly  easterly direction and the force of the winds, the thick snow cover that hinders ice formation, and the slow cooling of the sea have all joined to play a practical joke on us: the water is open. But the rocks at the shore wear ice caps, proper papachas, high and many-banded: the sinking of the water level step by step has left nicely layered zones of freezing in the ice around the stones.
