Something to see

Icicle fence at Pakri peninsula on February 7.

A trip to Pakri peninsula must be encouraged, to admire the icicles below the clint brink. The stairs that bring you down to the shore by the shortest way aren’t icy at all – there have been no thaws. Coming from the city of Paldiski, one gets off at the protected area sign and from there it is a walk along a well-trampled path to the stairs that go down from the clint brink. Going down isn’t risky at all, on the Looduse Omnibuss excursion last weekend 4-year-old children climbed down there, only loose snow had to be pushed aside.
The icicles at the brink are quite sizeable according to geologist Tõnis Saarne, but the cold winter weather is’t the most important cause: there have been cold winters, but if drought in the previous summer leaves the water wells dry, then despite strong cold there will be no icicles. This year however the Snow Queen’s pillars have grown to impressive sizes of ten metres and more. Only soon the pale green-blue icicle world will begin to melt: after all, how long can it be to spring now?
