The grouse mating plays, leks, belong to the grand and exotic shows of nature. Walking along forest and bog paths in early spring, the rambler is accompanied in the first morning hours by a far-reaching, cooing sound that is almost impossible to locate. The special bubbling sound often carries far away. The experience is even more powerful if you happen to be in the midst of this bubbling cauldron when a dominating cock becomes silent for a moment, then reminds his competitors of his rank. It sounds like - tschsst!

The Estonian Ornithological Society’s second lecture evening of this year in the series “Universities to society!” takes place in Tartu, Baer’s house (Veski 4) on Thursday, February 25, at 6.15 pm.

Agu Leivits talks on the theme "Investigations of  bird fauna in Estonian bogs".

The lecture takes up the species and distribution of birds nesting in bogs, and the special characteristics and nature protection values of this fauna. The changes in the bird fauna in Estonian bogs during the last fifty years are reviewed, and the causes of this, as well as the use of modern investigation methods for evaluating the status of the habitats, are discussed.

The lecture series "Universities to society!" aims to show some of the forefront of ornithological studies, by inviting ornithologists working at our universities to share their most recent findings with bird friends. The bird scientists talk about their new results, and open the backstage door to scientific research for us.
New surprising knowledge and plenty of illustrations from colourful field work can be expected!

The lectures can be followed and enjoyed by all. All with an interest in birds are welcome!

The complete series programme is on the EOÜ home page: www.eoy.ee
