Meadow like a river bed

Fox hunting for prey.
The picture of the fox walking in a snowy meadow with last year’s grass is for comparison: the ground emerging from the melting snow here isn’t slick with pressed-down straws of grass. But this year it is so, for instance in north Estonia: the grasses pressed down to the ground and now appearing out of the melting snow look like the bottom of a fast flowing river, where the plants are forced down in the direction of the flow. This is so because much snow fell this year, and nearly all at once, and it stayed for a long time, fluffy on top of the hayfield, molding it into nice wavy shapes. At the same time, since the snow didn’t freeze to ice all the way down, some plants with stronger stalks, like milfoils and orpines, stayed upright and unbroken. It certainly doesn't look like that every year.
