Frog spawn.

The weather was chilly, with variable clouds and windy. At night the wind abated and in most early mornings the ground was white with frost. From time to time there was rain, and occasionally grains of snow and snow slush. A heavier rain fell on April 22, in the night, when there were water puddles on the roads and earthworms had crawled out on the asphalt. There were also small earthworm heaps to be seen on the soil. Hedgehogs were moving around. Common toads, common frogs and moor frogs gathered in the spawning water bodies, although some sadly perished on the motor roads. Already in the beginning of the week spawn of common frogs was to be seen in ponds with stagnant water.

Among birds lapwings arrived during the week. The mass migration of geese continued and as before, resting birds were to be seen on fields near waters.

The development of plants turned very slow with the cool weather, and the nearly one-week advance over average development at the end of last week was reduced to a few days. During the week the first wood anemones started to flower and the city lawns turned green. The rains retarded the fast drying of soils and slowed the tempo of springtime field work.
