Both the noctule bat and the parti-coloured bat occur locally in Estonia. They are here only during the summer and migrate to Central and Southern Europe for the winter. During the migration journey they can travel up to 1500 kilometres.
The noctule bat is the largest bat species in Estonia. It can weigh up to 40 grams and the wing spread is up to 400 millimetres. Characteristic traits are a brown and short-haired fur and a broad, mushroom-shaped tragus or ear cover.
The parti-coloured bat is a little larger than bats on average. Its body shape and colouring are similar to those of the northern bat. It is distinguished from the latter by the silvery sheen on its back, the white belly and the broad ears.
