Beautiful but poisonous

Mezereon.

  Mezereon
Harilik näsiniin
 Daphne mezereum

Beneath the forest canopy the beautiful red fruits of the daphne, sitting directly on the branches, are ripening. Botanically the „berries” are stone fruits or drupes, that is, similar to plums.
The beautiful, tempting berries are very toxic; fortunately they have an unpleasant taste and that usually saves children from serious poisoning because it makes them spit the berries out . All parts of the plant are toxic – it is better not to touch it, and even better if we recognize the mezereon and so can avoid unpleasant accidents.

Folk names in Estonia have been "death flower", but also "forest lilac".
