If you get out in nature in early autumn in dryish forests, on hillock slopes, or the verges of sand and gravel pits, and along railway banks, there are still flowering plants. For instance the basil thyme, with pale lilac, pretty flowers in the leaf axils and with a mint fragrance.

It flowers from June onwards but it is often overlooked in the abundance of flowers in summer. The small, up to 30 centimetres high plant with elliptic half-centimetre long leaves along the stem, lives one or two years. Basil thyme can safely be used for flavouring dishes.
