In a bare landscape bullfinches catch the eye
Bullfinch | Leevike | Pyrrhula pyrrhula |
Our bullfinches lead a hidden life during their summer nesting period. It isn’t very easy to see them during that time unless their nesting tree is known. They aren’t as companionable as other finches. About a hundred thousand bullfinches nest in Estonia and a few hundred thousand stay here for the winter – roughly the same order of numbers.
In October we meet migrants coming from the north and in November they continue moving around in flocks.
Adulot birds of both sexes have a black top of the head, but not yet the young birds. All have black wings with a white band. The male bird has bullfinch red cheeks, throat and breast, the female birds have brown colours there. A joy to behold.
Bullfinches feed on buds of trees, plant seeds and the still remaining – few – berries on trees and bushes.
