The sunny and colourful autumn runs towards its end and our graceful roe deer are changing their coats: depending on the severity of the weather winter hairs are added until Christmas and the bright „rump mirror” is clearly visible.
The length of the coarse outer hairs is a little more than 5 centimetres in winter; the hairs are like tubes and brittle. Hollow hairs are very useful in our humid and changeable climate for preserving the body heat.
From October onwards the pride of the bucks is disappearing: the casting of the antlers has started and that lasts until December. Young bucks may now wear their first „sticks”, see Arne’s photo at the end of the text.
The time of abundant summer food is past, life is in a transition period. there are still herbaceous plants and easily reachable lichens and mosses but the stomach of the deer must get used to twigs, buds and bark from trees and bushes. A hard time is approaching and as early winter advances there is good reason to observe the formation and behaviour of the winter flocks.
