Partridges searching for food

The snow is a delight for some, a punishment for others. And what will the weather make of it?
Partridges are the size of a small hen. We won’t see them in forests but in meadows, fields, weedy plots, the mosaic landscape of seashore pastures. They live nearly exclusively on the ground. The snow cover is still powdery now and scratching and digging to get to the food on the ground is easy : remaining grain, seeds, green plants ...
In frosty weather the snow is a nice duvet for the partridges. They sit almost motionless in the snow blanket, only with the brick-coloured tops of heads showing. In blizzards cover is sought for instance at hedges.
Life turns harder after the first thaw, and that is promised already for next week. We will see what kind of ice bark there will be on the snow after that. The number is estimated at some twenty thousand birds, and more severe winters are as a rule disastrous for partridges. Enemies in winter are foxes, raccoon dogs – plenty of them around – and raptors.
