2009 waterfowl count on Hiiumaa
It is time for the regular international midwinter water fowl count. This year January 15-16 have been selected as the central days for the count. As in previous years all observations made in January will be registered. Observers may simply not be free on the central weekend. Please, however, try to make your observation trips as close to the key dates as possible: ice conditions may be very variable in January.
In the coastal seas the north-western coast of Hiiumaa, parts of the western coast of Saaremaa and the mainland coast from the northwest up to Loksa (east of Tallinn) are still ice-free. Ice situation charts from the EMHI ( Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute), are here:

In inland observation areas mallards are most numerous.
To make the summing-up easier a form for the observation data has been used for several years already; a model is shown on the Ornithological Society’s home page:
A summary of last year’s count, maps of the observation sectors and earlier observation results can also be read there.
We look forward to your observation results
