Most visitors use the bird feeder like a bistro – a seed, or even better, a nut into the beak and quickly away. The greenfinches, however, spend a pleasant time in the coffee shop. They leave a somewhat dumpy impression but the beak is perfect for a seed-eater – strong, conical and when needed dangerously sharp.
The male bird is greenish, the female greenish grey, with brown-banded back, yellow edges to the wings and pink feet as blackbirds too have. Sometimes they are a little quarrelsome towards other brds in larger companies but that seems to depend on the mood of the day.
Wintering greenfinches are quite numerous, as an estimate maybe up to 50 000 birds.
Sometimes greenfinches are confused with siskins and sometimes with yellowhammers, all greenish-yellow birds. Because of that the others too have been described.
