In the winter garden bird survey TALV2011 arranged by the Estonian Ornithological Society, 19 000 birds were noted on January 29th and 30th according to the preliminary summary. 615 bird enthusiasts had forwarded their observations at noon on Monday from more than 540 locations all over Estonia. Such a number of observations makes it possible to draw conclusions with some confidence about the species range and the changes in numbers of our winter bird community.
Altogether the bird enthusiasts noted more than 18 800 birds of 53 species. The most numerous was, as expected, the great tit that made up nearly one fourth of the total of observed birds. The second place was claimed by the greenfinch followed, seeing to total numbers, by the tree sparrow, bullfinch and yellowhammer. Many observers noted that the numbers and range of species of the birds were kept down by temperatures above zero, strong wind and blowing snow. In the preliminary results the average number of encountered birds per location was markedly lower than earlier, only 35 individuals (average in 2010, 43 individuals).
The Estonian Ornithological Society thanks all who took part in the garden bird survy. We would like remind that observation results can be sent in until .February 10th. As earlier, data can be submitted on the home page of the garden bird survey l
http://www.eoy.ee/talv/Vaatlusankeet.html or they can be sent by mail to the coordinator (Eesti Ornitoloogiaühing, Veski 4, Tartu 51005). We certainly also look forward to reports from locations where no birds were seen during the observation hour. The definitive summary will be ready on February 20th.
