Ravens in courting flight

Raven Ronk or kaaren Corvus corax

The clever ravens are sedentary birds in Estonia; they don’t change their mates and the pairs keep together throughout the whole year. During a couple of weeks courting behaviour is active, repairs are made on the nest or the need of building a new one is revealed.  Egg-laying generally starts in March.

Raven black means that it is difficult to find a “more black” bird – the feathers, the powerful beak, even the eyes and feet are all black. The plumage has a metallic, iridescent sheen and the tail is wedge-shaped. The population in winter is more than twenty thousand birds; the winter guests prepare, little by little, to move north- and eastwards. Around five thousand pairs stay to breed in Estonia.
