Is is seldom that waxwings have nested in Estonia. This winter they were fewer than usual too, but in the last weeks flocks of them have made themselves noticed as they move in flocks of 10-20, searching for any still remaining berries on trees and bushes. Juniper thickets and juniper berries aren’t overlooked in the search.

The beautiful birds go about their business without fear of people, only when they are disturbed the whole flock flies to a neighbouring tree. Breeding in the tundra and forest zone, they don’t meet many humans, and from this the lack of fear stems.

Diffferences between young and adult birds: the young lack the black patch on the throat and the silky sheen is duller. All have the splendid head crest.

As they fly in flocks a special, continuous ringing sound is heard.
