Wintering kingfisher

The cold of the last few weeks has put an ice cover on all rivers and most rapids. Bird life is concentrated to open parts of rapids. Those that depend on an ice-free river as a food source are there; at the start of the cold period we introduced the dipper : http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/9447

With luck wintering kingfishers may be seen. They have a brightly-coloured plumage all year round: the breast is red-orange, the back electric blue but we can see stunning colours as the light changes.

What is there to get from the rapids? Small fish fry, minnow, stickleback, bleak, stone loach, gudgeon and up to 7 centimetres long fry of larger fish; bigger prey isn’t manageable. If fish are scarce, other beings will do: aquatic woodlice, water-living insects or insect larvae. The kingfisher sits in wait for its prey on a branch reaching out on the water, more seldom on a stone. The prey is caught with a fast dive into 20-30 centimetres deep water.
