A week ago we could see the mating display of white-tailed eagles in the grey seal monitoring camera. Mats saw and photographed the "spring in heart“ mood of golden eagles.
Truly splendid, even now at the end of winter with a gliding flight image, with wing and tail feathers spread wide. The nest has surely already been checked by the pair, maybe also tidied unless a snowdrift covers it.
Adult golden eagles winter near their nesting place. The nest tree is usually a large pine, very rarely the nest is set in a spruce or an aspen, often on a marsh or bog islet.
40 – 50 golden eagle pairs nest in Estonia; some pairs have two nests but they are used in different years. Golden eagles are extremely true to their nesting location and if there are no disturbances may nest in the same place for decades; legends are told about them that stay in the memory of people. In mid-March a clutch of one or two eggs has usually been laid. The hatching of the chicks may be expected in the second half of April.
As a rule in July one nestling will fledge. Golden eagles are not very fertile, there is good reason to protect them.
