We can see the nuthatches in pairs in cities as well as in the forest. At Alutaguse they were moving in flocks together with crested tit and willow tit pairs and came to see what the men were doing in the forest. They don’t seem to have any shyness of people at all. Calls were clear and ringing.

In the exterior the black eye streak and the long, strong beak are characteristic. The male and the female have similar plumages. The back is blue-grey, the underparts white and the sides of the belly and the underside of the tail rust brown. On tree trunks their movements are skilful both going upwards and coming down with the head downwards – the only one of our birds that climbs down a tree trunk in this way.
