Basically greylag geese travel along the western sea coast and stop in nearby areas. Occasional birds may come inland together with bean goose flocks; it is rather exceptional, but may happen. In Veljo’s recording the calls of the greylag geese sound somehow familiar – because we have to do with the ancestors of domestic geese; the calls of bean geese are quite a bit more nasal.

Externally these are our most light-coloured geese. The weight of an adult bird is up to 3-4 kilos, and so are only to be confused with the smaller and darker bean geese.

Some characteristics to identify  the species: a sure sign is the bright front edge of the wings; particularly in flight these catch the eye (compare the flight views). Head, neck and back are greyish-brown, the belly part clearly lighter. The beak and feet of adults are pinkish orange, those of young birds may be less strongly coloured, in case anyone should notice.

The bean geese will be introduced when they begin to be seen more frequently.
