My bears: May-June 2011

Text: Triin Ivandi

Most of the time this May and June I spent in Alutaguse. I was in the watching hide, or driving on the Alutaguse endless forest roads, listened, watched and looked for birds and mammals.
Often on my way back again to Tallinn, my heart wanted to stay in Alutaguse.

Some of the interesting things I saw::

-          2nd of May in brown bear hide. Suddenly we saw a female bear and three cubs coming. Cubs were walking carefully close to their mamma.

-           Two big male bears are called Sven and Trulla. 28th of May Sven comes to the watching area, rolls himself on the ground, marking the territory. After a while he continued on his way. About 15 minutes later Trulla came, sniffing the place where Sven had been and followed him.

Possibly those two bears met but later in the evening we just saw Trulla. Trulla was often in the watching area with his girlfriends, Sven however alone. Although Sven is the bigger brown bear, he seems less aggressive.

-           4th of June. Sven is in the watching area and eats carcass. Suddenly he stands still and listens to something. Second later he runs to the left and we saw Oskar climbing up very fast to the top of the tree. After while Oskar comes down. Sven didn’t mind Oskar at all, he just continued eating. Oskar stands on the other side of the watching area and looks very carefully in Sven’s direction.  Very soon  Oskar left.  Later in the evening, after Sven had left, Oskar came to eat the carcass.

- 12th of June there is a brown bear in the watching area. Big, like Sven but so unsure- sniffs around, listens and even stands up on his hind feet to listen. There is a reason, Sven comes from the other side and chases the  new bear away. Haven’t seen Sven moving so fast!
- 12th of June brown bear and red fox at the same site. Sven doesn’t mind the fox at all, although fox passes very close to the bear, at about 10 m. Fox looks at the bear but continues with his own business .

We also had a chance to see  brown bears three times from the bus. The best occasion  was seeing a male and female brown bear on the forest road. Twice we saw Oskar ( Oskar is a young, 2 years old bear.

15th of June Hannes Soosaar saw a young wolf. The wolf was there about an hour and come close to the hide – 8 m!

Summary May - June 18th, 2011:
Nights in the bear hide :9
Nights when we saw brown bears: 8
Bear seen outside of hide: 3
Most frequent visitors: Sven, Oskar
Different brown bears: 10

My most interesting brown bear observation  I have from last year, when I saw a bear during cycling.
