"The origin of species“ finally in Estonian

Title page of first edition

Charles Darwin’s  book "The Origin of Species"  - “Liikide tekkimine“ – was first published on November 24th, 1859, and quickly sold out.  The work caused considerable controversy because it refuted the creation story of the Bible. Darwin presented a theory of evolution which essentially agrees with the theories that are recognized today.
His theory of evolution is based on observations collected in the 1830’ies  on his journey around the world (on board the ship "HMS Beagle“). It is one of the landmark works of science. It might be seen as somewhat wordy but it is written in a language that is understandable for all who are interested.
“Liikide tekkimine”, the Estonian translation of Charles Darwin’s “The origin of species“, will be presented in Tartu on September 20th. The book appears in the series "Loodusteaduste klassikuid”, “The classics of science“ of the Estonian Naturalists’ Society (Eesti Looduseuurijate Seltsi, LUS). The book has been  translated by Mart Niklus, and edited by Mart Viikmaa, Ivar Puura and Oive Tinn.

In 2006 Darwin’s autobiography was published in the “Loodusteaduste klassikuid” series.
