Since the end of summer foxes have lived solitarily,  marking their territories that may be somewhere around ten square kilometres. Does it belong to a male or female? On finding urine markings it will be clear: where it is done at a tree stump by lifting the leg we have to do with a male. Vixens hunch down characteristically for canines; the yellow patch will be left between the hind legs.

 

In a few weeks we can find the trails of foxes running together.

 

The senses of hearing and of smell of foxes are particularly keen; after all, you can’t manage otherwise when hunting small rodents. Eyesight is quite good, but an observer standing motionless will not be noticed by the fox; the smallest movement however will be registered at once. The exceptional memory of foxes and the almost unbelievable reaction speed are remarkable.

 

Foxes are adaptable and omnivores if necessary. They hunt small rodents – the snow cover is still soft, only a week old, so they live ”royally”. They also search for leftovers from big predators. For change vegetable food will do too – on the feeding ground grain can be found.
