The bigger owlet at the entrance to the nest hollow
Life in the nest is coming to an end for the owlets in the next few days – who has once left the nest hollow will not go back there.
Summing up briefly, the parents no longer warm the growing owlets at nights from April 17th onwards. The food needed for the young birds increases day by day and both parents are kept busy with finding it.
The owlets started observing the world from the entrance already on the first days of May, and the bigger owlet will leave soon. The younger will not be far behind either. The adults will feed the owlets that clamber around in the trees nearby and announce their presence by calling to the parents.
They cannot fly yet, and their plumage is still like a chick’s. They hold on to branches with three toes and sharp talons (claws); the fourth toe of all owls faces backwards. If they happen to slip on a branch and get the head downwards they struggle into the upright position again aided by the beak. They are entertaining creatures, if you have the opportunity and time to observe them in your home garden or in a park. In evening dusk the shrill-voiced food begging ”psee-ep” starts and lasts almost until sunrise.
