Redpoll
Redpoll | Urvalind |
Few redpolls stayed for the winter here because of the snow that came early last year, already at the end of November, and the steadily low temperatures. Winters aren’t alike, and it turned out as we guessed:
Flocks of redpolls from the south were observed already last week. Redpolls can be seen foraging in birches and alders, looking - as their Estonian name, urvalind - "catkin bird“ says - for catkins. Arne caught the photo of the redpoll on the ground under the bird feeder
The tit-sized bird with a grey plumage has a characteristic wine-red patch on the forehead; the beak is yellow and the breast of the male bird is embellished by a rose-coloured “shirt front“. In some individuals these characteristics may be lacking but since they move about in flocks it is still possible to know with whom one has to do.
