Who walked on the snow? Mobile helps you know

You can find out much more about the movements of animals in winter because they leave tracks along their paths on the snow. But who left the tracks there?

Track books help to find the answer, but you don’t always carry them with you in the forest. But if you have a smart phone and have installed the University of Tartu smart phone application "Kes käis? - Who was here?" you can identify the owners of the most common tracks, just with the aid of your mobile. “Kes käis?” is based on the „Ulukite jäljevihik - Game track book“, compiled and published by the Estonian Environmental Information Centre.

The main focus is on photos that provide realistic images of tracks in different snow conditions. To demonstrate the track sizes better matchboxes have been set next to the tracks. Short descriptions of the habitats and feeding preferences of the animals are also included. Altogether 24 game species are described plus cat and dog tracks so that they can be distinguished from the game animals.

The game track booklet can be downloaded in PDF book format at

http://www.keskkonnainfo.ee/failid/Ulukite_jaljevihik_2011.pdf  and it can be used in your computer, iPad or e-reader or printed.

The application is compatible with Apple devices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) and with Android devices.  "Kes käis? – Who was here?" can be found at AppStore:  http://itunes.apple.com/ee/app/kes-kais/id492565774?mt=8.  For Android devices it can be downloaded from: https://market.android.com/search?q=Kes+käis&c=apps.

"Kes käis?" is one of the digital versions of the game animal track book; it was created within the University of Tartu TEEME project "Digitaalsed taimetargad taskus ja arvutis - loodushariduse edendamine interaktiivsete määrajate kaudu - Digital wizards in your pocket and computer – promotion of nature education using interactive keys”.

In the words of project leader Andres Saag it is a very easy-to-use tool and manual for all nature enthusiasts. All material – track photos, diagrams and accompanying explanatory texts - is stored in the smart phone; you never need to worry about coverage after the application has been loaded in your phone - connection to the data source is not needed after the application has been installed. And after all, when you head for the forest you should always bring along a charged mobile.
